ON BUILDING STEEL FRAME BIKES WITH ROGERS BESPOKE

In a world where new bike frames possess an unavoidable sameness and questionable ethical production, frame builders like Rogers Bespoke stand out. Not because they are simply different but because they make a connection with quality and meaningful design.

Based in Adelaide, JR is the sole frame builder of Rogers Bespoke. His work has received recognition from bike freaks globally. Locally, we can say we have a biased admiration for Rogers Bespoke (see our co-founders bike here).

Luckily for the beautiful-and-well-made-bike deprived citizen Rogers Bespoke has just released the first ever Signature Series – the Rōnin. We are infinitely curious about the process behind building a steel frame and teamed up with JR to get some answers.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF STEEL BIKE BUILDING GOING?

Steel frames have been built for over 100 years and I think that will go well into the future. Mass produced carbon will always be the option for most consumers, but lightweight custom steel will be here for those in the know! Technology is coming along and as such we are seeing some great innovations with additive printing which is becoming accessible now also.

DO YOU SEE TRENDS IN YOUR CUSTOMERS REASONS FOR COMMISSIONING A CUSTOM STEEL FRAME?

Sometimes yes, but there are a variety of reasons. The most rewarding are when the rider is simply too large or too small to have an off the shelf frame fit them and custom is the only option. Control and options are a big part for a lot of riders decision to go custom also. To have a frame specifically built for you where you can choose all the options and have that frame represent you is a pretty desirable aspect. Restraint plays a big part in not making your bike look like Homer’s dream car though!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FRAME YOU’VE BUILT SO FAR AND WHY?

With each frame is a lesson learnt, so I have a soft spot for every one of them. Ultimately you are only as good as your last frame and the last build was pretty good. It’s a bat shit weird build, but it somehow works. Matte green and black fade, monostay, under chainstay brake and a weird build list. Im just putting the final touches on the build now and then old mate Andy of Fame and Spear will take a few shots.

WHY STEEL OVER TITANIUM?

Every frame material has it’s own merit and strengths, but steel has a character in its ride and to work with that is so versatile.

WHAT INFLUENCES DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR FRAME BUILDING?

I guess I draw influence from all over the place, but bike builders specifically there are a few. Darren Baum as an Aussie builder has been the most supportive. Always up for a chat and a kind word. Shows why he’s at the top of the ladder! Having said that Geoff Scott was a big reason I starting building in the first place. He has a very humble approach which I admire.
Ahh Chris Bishop for sure, his workmanship is outstanding! Seth Rosko for his no bullshit do not wrap this in cotton wall approach! And lastly I think you have to appreciate the FTW approach of Sachs who says I’m gonna make one style of bike for 40 years and end up with a waiting list almost as long!

FAVOURITE HOPS BASED SPORTS DRINK AT THE MOMENT?

Anything black! Looking forward to trying the new Mismatch stout!

DO YOU HAVE A DREAM BIKE PAINT JOB?

The Songailo paint job was pretty rad! Would like to do another collab with a different artist. Apart from that however, I’m digging pearls at the moment.
